An Enriching Experience in Kenya

And so it was. Fourteen volunteers, including four members from, headed off for four weeks in Kenya during the month of August. While in Kenya, the group volunteered on three different projects, namely the Salesian schools in Langata and in Makuyu, as well as the St Therese Development Center in the vicinity of Naivasha. There was also an opportunity to visit the Kawangware slum, as well as visiting families in remote villages in the Siakago and Embu areas, where Louis Debono - one of the members - had previously spent a year of his life volunteering!

The Maltese volunteers organised games, crafts and outdoor activities to brighten up the holidays of the children in Langata, a residential boys home for street children, as well as the children of the St Therese Development Center, a residential rehabilitation centre for physically or sexually abused children. At the time, these projects hosted around 80 and 40 children respectively. Meanwhile, in Makuyu the volunteers did some manual work, including clearing up and renovating some rooms that will be now be used as residential premises for girls.

All in all, this was a great experience shared by all the Maltese group, who came back to Malta with a lighter heart (as they had left a piece behind them in Kenya) and with tonnes of memories in their heads!
