Different Goups..Different Places.. SAME Spirit

All the different Salesian groups met for a whole evening on Saturday 11th October for the first ‘Salesian Animators of Malta-Encounter'. There was an amazing and interesting treasure hunt where every group had the opportunity to learn and familiarise themselves with the other Salesian groups. Later on, after the treasure hunt came to an end, everyone celebrated mass together as one united family. The idea that every powerful action started with a simple idea was highlighted. This showed how a small spark of creativity can create something very beautiful.

#DareToSPYS Weekend

SPYS met for another annual weekend this September. Amongst other things the focus of the weekend was to discuss creativity within the SPYS context.

It was an eventful, creative and relaxing weekend where different members of SPYS got to share, create and imagine different ideas.
Special thanks goes to everybody who made the weekend possible. These weekends surely bring us all closer together. #daretospys.

Volunteers Welcome Back

Every year, a number of youths take the opportunity to volunteer some of their time and venture outside of europe as missionaries. This year was not different, and a group of 14 volunteers responded to the Call for Volunteers organised by SPYS. SPYS.Int held preparatory, formation meetings and team building sessions, as well as helped us organise fund raising events for the projects that we were going to be working on in Kenya and in India. SPYS.Int members supported and encouraged us in all aspects of the preparation that entails when visiting a country to work as a volunteer.

I'm No Longer the Same

Visiting an African country to work with children in a different environment, culture and traditions was my lifelong dream. Finally on 1st August 2014, after some bumps in the road, I landed in Kenya and was on my way to St. Theresa Development & Rehabilitation Centre in Naivasha. A centre offering rehabilitation, education, care and love to abused children aged between 5 and 15 years. This year 14 volunteers from Malta, Egypt, Canada, Czech Republic and Slovakia came together to organise 4 weeks holidays for the children.

Experiences, Emotions and Fun !

Hey! Writing about our experience in Belgium brings back a smile on my face. Faye Hamilton, Chanel Borg and myself were given the opportunity to participate in a life changing experience! Voluntary work is truly not just about giving!
On the 4th of July we left Malta for Belgium to join a group of international volunteers -from Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic, Spain and Germany. The Belgians, who were part of the EVS team organised the whole programme really well. We felt welcomed right from the start.

A Prayer for Peace

After a busy summer for many of the SPYS volunteers, it was time to get together again and meet up as a whole team. SPYS members met for an evening session in Sliema in which together they spent a reflective moment about the current world situation. Just like the Archbishop and the Pope have been remarking about the wars and fights that are happening constantly around us, SPYS also spared a reflective moment for our brothers and sisters - being of any Religion, colour or creed - around the world who are suffering the hardships of war.

YES Camp 2014

As had been done in previous years, YES, one of the task groups within SPYS, has gathered a group of about 30 youths (ages 10-15) for a two week summer camp in Senglea. These two weeks were filled with a variety of different activities which helped bring out the youths' characters as well as uncover hidden skills both in the youths as well as in the leaders organising the camp.

“All Aliens" - Step 1 Exchange

The experience of the Exchange named "All Alien" that was held in Benediktbeuern, Germany, was one of those experiences that you couldn't miss. The training course was about immigration, hence, the name "All Alien". This was so, because of the experience of feeling alienated when you are part of a different group or culture.

SPYS Volleyball League Champions

For the third consecutive year, the Salesian Volleyball League took place from November 2013 till the end of May 2014. Although this league gathered six teams consisting of 6 to 8 players, each playing against each other, only two teams held out to the end of the league. The final game was held on May 29 at around 9pm between Cookie Monsters and SPYS Volley who played and fought until the end of the game, for the winning cup. One could also appreciate the effort and energy of both teams throughout the game.

Mdina Hunt for Appogg Employees

The sun was out and it was quite breezy in Mdina when a group of APPOGG employees from the Child Protection Unit met for half a day of team-building sessions led by SPYS.

They were 11, all geared up with a competitive attitude between them to make sure that whatever the challenge is, they win. All of them wanted to win.
