Maltese Volunteers on the Belgian Playgrounds

On arrival we were welcomed by the other international EVS'ers, including participants from Spain, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany and of course the host country Belgium. During each weekend, we spent time site seeing, doing evaluation and creative workshops, and showing off our own Don Bosco structures when compared to those from other countries.

Step 1 - Champions of Fair Play

Between the 22nd and the 29th of July, thirty-four young people from all over Europe, met in Poland to participate in DBYN's Step 1 training course, whose title was "Champions of Fair Play". The participants, who originated from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Spain, United Kingdom, and Poland itself, all brought with them a baggage of experiences, ideas, and cultures, to share it with the rest of the team.

SPYS' Send-off: Summer, Sausages and a Soft Toy

If 2011 was a success for SPYS' efforts to prepare and send volunteers to Salesian projects in Ghana, Kenya and India, then 2012 is proving to be a blast, with a record number of 25 volunteers opting to dedicate their time and energies to doing voluntary work. It was therefore only natural that this year's send-off for volunteers was bigger than ever before with a wonderful number of volunteers, their family or friends, as well as other SPYS members getting together in Mtarfa for the Summery evening of 8 July.

"From the experienced cooks to those who never even boiled an egg, all the volunteers of the YES (Youths Engage in Senglea) group, along with their families and friends, participated in baking cakes for their annual self-raising....i mean fund-raising! Cake Sale, organised at St. Patrick's church in Sliema on Sunday 20th May. For the 3rd consecutive year, YES - a task group of the Salesian Pastoral Youth Service (SPYS) voluntary organisation, will be organising a two-week summer camp at the Salesian house in Senglea for the young youths from Senglea and the surrounding areas.

Friday the 13th of April marked at another successful fund raising event for SPYS, where an amount of €1400 euros have been raised in aid of Mamma Margerita home, a project pioneered by the Salesian Community in Malta. This event was held at VGen Paceville, and the music by Dj Geez took us on a journey throughout the 50s and 60s era. Special thanks goes to our sponsors who made this event possible: VGen, Dj Geez, Tonio Lombardi photography and Corner Hostel (Sliema).

Tuesday 1st May was a public holiday for most people, but the radio station Radju Marija did not have their break. Instead the presenter of ‘Fuq Ġwienaħ iż-Żgħożija’ opened up his discussion on rights and obligations with SPYS.

Full Speed Ahead: Preparations for Voluntary Work 2012

What started off in January as an information session about voluntary work opportunities offered by SPYS continued with a series of preparation sessions for the prospective volunteers. To date, the climax of these preparation sessions was a residential weekend organised at Savio College on the last weekend of April. Along with SPYS members, a wonderful number of 20 volunteers spent a largely sunny weekend together for these activities.

It was perfect weather for the occasion of Maundy Thursday. I could feel the comfortable breeze as we set to prepare the venue for the prayer meeting. As the time to start drew near, everything was ready.
When one entered the chapel, they could feel a sense of peace. The room was dim, relaxing music was being played and the focus was entirely on the Eucharist, which was surrounded by small lit candles.

YES goes Camping !

While the clock has gone forward by 1 hour on Sunday 25th March, a group of YES (Youths Engage in Senglea) volunteers were camping in Mellieha. With everyone sitting around the altar prepared by the participants present, Fr. Antoine sdb started off the event with an open-air mass on Saturday evening. Surrounded by the peaceful countryside around us, it was a pleasant experience for all of us to share together. After mass, snacks were shared while a bonfire was prepared.

Teamwork Session for PLYG

Five members of SPYS have recently teamed up to provide training for a number of youths from the group PLYG (Pastoral Liturgical Youth Group). The day-long session, held on March 17th, at the Chapel of Christ our Saviour, Ghaxaq, saw the participation of around twenty youths from PLYG, as part of a weekend retreat at the same location. The session was an interesting one indeed and was well received by the participants and their leaders.
