A Fulfilling Experience in Ghana

It was with excitement that, in early August, I left Malta for Ghana.  For the second year running I was about to spend a 4-week period of doing voluntary work with the children in Salesian projects.  This year I spent my time in Tema New Town where, for the first 2 weeks of my trip we organised Summer camp for the children.  I say, "we," because I joined up with Ghanaian animators, Nigerians studying to become Salesians, and German and Croatian volunteers… overall a very nice mix of

On Friday, 27th August, the Salesian Pastoral Youth Service (SPYS) organized Chick-A-Boom- a 70s theme party, held at Ta' Fra Ben in Qawra, in aid of Salesian projects in Malta, India,Ghana and South America. More than 370 people attended the party collecting €2410.50.

The Most Fulfilling Experience Of My Whole Life

Kenya 2010_2
Volunteering in Kenya, Africa was perhaps the most fulfilling experience of my whole life. I travelled with my friend and collaegue Claudine to Nyabondo Rehabilitation Centre, which catered for approximately 70 children with disabilities. As physiotherapists, our work with the children revolved mainly around physiotherapy sessions. However, during our free time we used to stay with the kids to draw, sing and play. On alternate days we attended a school for children with cerebral palsy, which was close by.

BE AdventurEUs

It was a hot Thursday afternoon, and I was on my way to the airport to Belgium for an adventure camp from the 20th till the 27th August. With butterflies in my stomach I approached the airport departure lounge still unsuspecting that I was about to start the best week of my life. As soon as we arrived at our destination in Brussels, we were warmly greeted by two of our trainers who quickly became our friends. The next day we headed back to the airport to meet the youths who were coming from Slovakia and Belgium.

I Witnessed a Miracle

Vakantiebos Holland 2010_2
On Sunday the 18th of July I said my goodbyes to my family and friends to leave on a journey to Holland. It was the first time that I was travelling alone and for such a stretch of time. Upon departure I only knew that I had to land in Schipol Airport and take a train to De Haag Station. I did not know who was going to pick me up or who what was going to happen from then on. I got to the station as scheduled and found one of my friends-to-be waiting to take me to my new home. There I met all the European volunteers and we gave a start to Vakantiebos 2010!

A Wonderful and Unforgettable Week

Step 1 Intercultural Learning_2
A wonderful and unforgettable week – That is how I would describe a one week youth exchange in Poland as part of an Intercultural Experience organized by DBYN. An experience that I will surely never ever forget in my life. It was amazing how some cultures differ from one another, but still, citizens from different cultures can cope and get well with each other.

At first we knew little about what to expect there, although we had heard about previous experiences which where all positive. When we arrived in Belgium we were immediately welcomed to the international group. During the first weekend we shared experiences and got to know different ideas and cultures, especially about the Belgian culture. We were given training in order to help us for see what we will encounter in the playground. The international volunteers where divided into five Belgian playgrounds.
